Place Value. The value of a digit based on its position in a base 10 number system.

Decimal Point. A period that separates whole number place values from decimal place values.

Whole Number. A number whose digits have place values to the left of the decimal point.

Decimal Number. A number that includes digits to the right of the decimal point.

Ones Place. The place value to the left of the decimal point.

Tens Place. The place value two places to the left of the decimal point.

Hundreds Place. The place value three places to the left of the decimal point.

Thousands Place. The place value four places to the left of the decimal point.

Ten Thousands Place. The place value five places to the left of the decimal point.

Hundred Thousands Place. The place value six places to the left of the decimal point.

Millions Place. The place value seven places to the left of the decimal point.

Ten Millions Place. The place value eight places to the left of the decimal point.

Hundred Millions Place. The place value nine places to the left of the decimal point.

Billions Place. The place value ten places to the left of the decimal point.

Tenths Place. The place value to the right of the decimal point.

Hundredths Place. The place value two places to places to the right of the decimal point.

Thousandths Place. The place value three places to places to the right of the decimal point.

Ten Thousandths Place. The place value four places to places to the right of the decimal point.

Hundred Thousandths Place. The place value five places to places to the right of the decimal point.

Place Value Chart. A tool for identifying the place value of digits in a number.

Power of 10. 10 raised to a whole number power, which indicates the place value of the digits of a number.

Standard Form. The usual way that numbers are written, where whole number place values are to the left of the decimal point and decimal values to the right.

Expanded Form. Writing a number as the sum of the individual place values of the digits.

Expanded Notation. Writing a number as the sum of the digits multiplied by a multiple of 10.

Expanded Notation with Powers of 10. Writing a number as the sum of the digits multiplied by a power of 10.

Word (or Verbal) Form. Writing a number using words instead of digits.

Decimal Square. A model used to represent decimal numbers.

Base Ten Blocks. A model used to represent whole numbers and powers of ten.

Ones Block. Part of a base ten block model used to represent the digit in the ones place.

Tens Block. Part of a base ten block model used to represent the digit in the tens place.

Hundreds Block. Part of a base ten block model used to represent the digit in the hundreds place.

Thousands Block. Part of a base ten block model used to represent the digit in the 1000s place.

Digit. In a Base Ten Number System, a number from 0 to 9 that is assigned to a place value.

Adding Using Place Value. Aligning numbers vertically by place value in order to add them.

Subtracting Using Place Value. Aligning numbers vertically by place value in order to subtract them.

Multiplying Using Place Value. Aligning numbers vertically by place value in order to multiply them.

Dividing Using Place Value. In the long division algorithm starting the division process at the highest place value of the dividend.

Comparing Numbers Using Place Value. Determining the relative size of two numbers based on the place value of the digits.

Rounding. Based on place value, estimating the value of a number.

Rounding to the Nearest Whole Number. Based on the digit in the tenths place, round up or keep the value in the ones place.

Rounding to the Nearest Ten. Based on the digit in the ones place, round up or maintain the value in the tens place.

Rounding to the Nearest Hundred. Based on the digit in the tens place, round up or down in the hundreds place.

Rounding to the Nearest Tenth. Based on the digit in the hundredths place, round up or maintain the value in the tenths place.

Rounding to the Nearest Hundredth. Based on the digit in the thousandths place, round up or maintain the value in the hundredths place.

Period. To make reading large numbers easier, grouping them into three digits separated by commas.

Base Ten Number System. A system that uses the digits 0-9 in each place value. A change in one place value is a ten-fold increase or decrease.

Scientific Notation. Writing a number with the leading number in the ones place multiplied by a power of 10. A shorthand way of writing very large or very small numbers.
