Finding the nth Term Of an Arithmetic Sequence: Example 3

nth Term of Arithmetic Sequence Example 3

Topic

Sequences and Series

Description

General Approach

For an arithmetic sequence, the nth term formula is given by: an = a1 + d•( n − 1 ), where: a1 is the first term of the sequence, d is the common difference between consecutive terms, and n is the term number.

Given Sequence

Sequence: [7, 13, 19, 25, 31]

Formula: an = 7 + 6(n - 1)

48th term: 289

To find the formula:

  • First term (a₁) = 7
  • Common difference (d) = 13 - 7 = 6
  • Use the formula: an = a₁ + (n - 1)d
