Accident Investigation

When a driver slams the brakes on a car, skid marks are created on the road. Accident investigators can measure the length of the skid marks to estimate the speed of the car. This involves using a quadratic function.

In this module, students use a quadratic model to predict the length of skid marks for various car speeds. The derivation of the quadratic model is shown algebraically and graphically. Students then use the model to solve a quadratic equation, given the total stopping distance.

This module assumes that students are familiar with quadratic functions. Students will get a real understanding for how quadratic functions are used in the real world.

Pyrotechnics and Quadratic Functions

In this module explore the paths of fireworks and learn about quadratic functions. Students explore parabolas graphed in Quadrant I, with roots at the origin and positive x. Students will learn about quadratic function in:

  • Standard form
  • Vertex form
  • Factored form

In fact, students learn to use parabolas to model specific fireworks trajectories, and therefore solve for the specific parameters for those functions. Try this module for fun and engaging way to learn about quadratics.

Algebra Application: Creating an Exercise Chart

In this Algebra Application, students develop a linear mathematical model based on the maximum heart rate during exercise based on age. Using this model, students investigate heart rate for moderate and vigorous workouts. The math topics covered include:

  • Mathematical modeling
  • Linear functions
  • Families of functions
  • Computational thinking

The culminating activity is for students to create a simple program (using either a spreadsheet or a programming language like Python) to develop an exercise chart.

This is a great back-to-school activity for middle school or high school students. A relevant real-world application allows them to review math concepts.

In this episode of Algebra Applications, three real-world explorations of quadratic functions are developed: Pyrotechnics. Fireworks displays are elegant examples of quadratic functions. Forensics. The distance a car travels even after the brakes are applied can be described through a quadratic function. Medicine. From the time a baby is born to the time it reaches 36 months of age, there is dramatic growth in height and weight. An analysis of CDC data reveals a number of quadratic models.

In this program, internationally acclaimed mathematics educator Dr. Monica Neagoy, explores the nature of linear functions through the use TI graphing calculators. Examples ranging from air travel, construction, engineering, and space travel provide real-world examples for discovering algebraic concepts.
