Media4Math  Factoring Quadratics

Factoring Quadratics

In this example, a quadratic is factored when the b-term is zero.

Review of factoring quadratics:

This set of Math Tutorials focuses on the technique of factoring a quadratic expression of the form shown below:

ax2 + bx + c

We are looking to rewrite the quadratic as the product of two binomials of this form (for three constants c1, c2, and c3):

(c1x + c2)(x + c3)

Specifically, you are looking at the factors of c in the original quadratic expression and identifying pairs of factors that add up to the b-term. Not all quadratics can be factored this way, but the techniques shown in this set of Math Tutorials gives you systematic method for finding those quadratics that do factor this way.

The library of Math Tutorials is a comprehensive collection of worked-out solutions to common math problems. This overcomes a common limitation of most textbooks: the handful of worked-out examples for a given concept. We provide the full array of examples and solutions, allowing students to identify patterns among the solutions, in order to aid concept retention. We also have quizzes for many of these topics.

Our current inventory of Math Examples include:
