Equations with Percents

In this example, a percent equation is solved to determine the given percentage of a number.

Review of percent equations:

Solving percent equations uses the same skills as solving any equation. What makes these equations different is the use of percentages. Percent equations fall into one of three categories.

Percent of a number. In this version of a percent equation, you know the percent and you know the number you want to find the percent of. This is the most straightforward type of percent equation.

Percent one number is of another. In this version you are given two numbers and are asked to find what percent one number is of another. In this version of the equation, you don't know the percent and it is the unknown that equation is solved to calculate.

Finding a number that is a given percent of another number. In this version you are given the percent and one of the numbers. You are asked to find what number is the given percent of the given number.
