Media4Math  Solving Equations with Fractions

Equations with fractions

In this example, a multi-step equation with fractions is solved.

Review of solving equations with fractions:

In this set of Math Tutorials, we focus on solving equations of the following forms:

a/b•x =c

a/bx = c/dx + f

For each equation, a, b, c, d, and f are integers, and there are fractions formed from four of the integers. Solving equations with fractions involves a multi-step process. Let's look at the steps involved for each type of equation.

Solving equations of the form a/bx = c. Solving equations with fractions of the form a/b involves multiplying by the reciprocasl of these fractions. Remember to multiply both sides of the equation by these reciprocal fractions.

Solving equations of the form a/bx = c/d•x + f. Solving equations when there are x-terms on both sides of the equation (with fractions as coefficients) involves subtracting one of the x-terms from both sides. In this case, this also involves combining two fractions to come up with a single fraction coefficient. Once you have rewritten the equation, you end up with the simplified version, which you can solve using the reciprocal fraction. Multiply both sides of the equation by this reciprocal fraction.

In general, solving equations with fractions requires that you be comfortable working with fractions. In particular, make sure you are adept at these skills:

The library of Math Tutorials is a comprehensive collection of worked-out solutions to common math problems. This overcomes a common limitation of most textbooks: the handful of worked-out examples for a given concept. We provide the full array of examples and solutions, allowing students to identify patterns among the solutions, in order to aid concept retention. We also have quizzes for many of these topics.
